Muntpunt Library and Information Center in Brussels Modernizes Return and Sorting System
BeeSmart, in collaboration with Nexbib, has been selected to deliver and maintain a customized book return and sorting system for Muntpunt, a library and information center in the heart of Brussels. To succeed in this tender and meet the specific requirements, both companies leveraged their extensive experience in developing advanced RFID solutions for libraries. This highlights their strong partnership and expertise as forward-thinking technology providers.
“The tender process was complex and challenging. Key factors in our selection were minimal floor space requirements, high adaptability, and improved sorting capabilities. We are pleased that our efforts have been recognized and that our technologies have impressed the committees,” says Marnix Eshuis, BeeSmart's Director. “Nexbib and BeeSmart share a vision for innovative, future-proof technologies that support modern library strategies and streamline daily workflows. We are excited to collaborate with BeeSmart, our trusted local partner in the Benelux,” adds Marco Gerritsen, Business Development Manager at Nexbib.
Muntpunt is enthusiastic about its collaboration with BeeSmart and looks forward to implementing the new return and sorting solution. The library is confident that this investment will lead to more efficient services and an improved experience for its users.
Significant Need for Improvement
The library currently operates a 10-year-old sorting system, which urgently needs modernization. The existing system is outdated and has several issues, including quickly contaminated sensors, an unclear and non-customizable user interface that leads to misuse, noise and odor disturbances from the compressor, a malfunction-prone book lift, and bins that cannot ensure sufficient capacity—requiring frequent manual emptying. In addition, frequent malfunctions and complications in operating the computer system, such as cumbersome connections for screens and keyboards, make the system inefficient and difficult to maintain.
The new sorting system will consist of two indoor return units and one outdoor return unit. These units will sort materials into three bins on the ground floor and 21 bins in the basement, connected via a dedicated transport lift. This state-of-the-art technology will significantly improve the efficiency of the return and sorting process at Muntpunt, enhancing the overall user experience and allowing library staff to dedicate more time to customer service and essential tasks.
Users can return materials at any time via the outdoor return unit. Items are automatically sorted based on various criteria, such as shelf location and reservations. Thanks to its modular design, the system can be adjusted and expanded as the library’s needs evolve. Even if the Library Management System (LMS) is temporarily unavailable, the sorting system will still accept and sort materials. High-quality sensors and intelligent algorithms ensure seamless operation, and the intuitive interface is available in multiple languages. The system is fully compatible with Muntpunt’s Wise system, and BeeSmart offers 24/7 remote access and rapid intervention in case of any issues.
The installation of the new sorting solution is planned for the second quarter of 2025. BeeSmart will train Muntpunt staff to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. Afterwards, BeeSmart will be responsible for maintaining the installation for 14 years.
