Efficient Media Lift with Minimal Footprint at the Cantonal Library Baselland
The Cantonal Library Baselland in Liestal is among the pioneers of automation in the Swiss library world. As early as 2005, the library was one of the first to install an RFID system for media return and sorting. Now, it was time to replace the existing system: both the outdoor return including the sorting line and lift system, as well as the security gate, were renewed.
Why the modernization?
"Our previous return system had become outdated. Failures were increasing, spare parts were no longer available, and maintenance was becoming difficult and costly," explains Rebekka Hirsbrunner of the Cantonal Library Baselland. Moreover, the planned switch to Quria in October 2024 necessitated a modernization of the technology to comply with current data protection and security regulations over the long term.
"We are pleased that we are now using a return and sorting system that is future-proof, ensures stable operation, and is reliable with both the current and the new LMS," says the deputy library director. "The positive experiences of other libraries in Switzerland and the Nordic countries with Quria and Nexbib were convincing."
Vertical Media Transport in Minimal Space
The new outdoor return allows items to be returned around the clock. Two aspects were challenging: the space available for the system is very limited, and the return and sorting are at different heights. This meant that the system design required an extremely flexible and slim design. The media therefore land directly after the return slot on a specific conveyor belt that overcomes a height of 1.65 m with an incline of 45°. The conveyor belt is designed specifically so that all items safely and quickly reach the sorting line above without slipping during transport.
"The particularly modular solution from Nexbib was perfectly integrated into this special spatial situation. It is even more compact than the previous system, allowing us to connect an additional bin to the sorting to have a sixth sorting target," adds Rebekka Hirsbrunner. "The conveying performance also operates pleasantly quietly. Other advantages include the easy operation and ergonomics of the Nex.Bins. The floor of the bins moves automatically electronically to an ergonomically comfortable height."
Accessible, Spacious Entrance
The new security gate also has advantages: the two transparent Nex.Gate antennas could be positioned much further apart than their predecessors. The entrance can now be used barrier-free in its entire width of 140 cm. People in wheelchairs, families with strollers, and groups can enter much more comfortably.
